Institute for Archaeology and Cultural Anthropology

Welcome to the Department of Anthropology of the Americas!

The subject "Anthropology of the Americas" deals with the history and present of the Americas from a long-term perspective, ranging from the cultures and societies before the conquest and colonization to the modern nation states.
This university subject, which is unique in Germany, includes the study of pre-Hispanic cultures and indigenous societies in Meso and South America, as well as the socio-cultural changes that accompanied colonialism and the analysis of current issues in contemporary Latin America, which cannot be explained without a historical perspective. Anthropology of the Americas is an interdisciplinary subject that combines archaeology, linguistics, ethnohistory and cultural anthropology.
The wide range of courses on offer uses methods such as field research, working with objects, epigraphy and others, some of which are digitally supported, to convey the diverse approaches to the Americas and their cultural heritage.
