Doctorate at the Department of Anthropology of the Americas
The Department of Anthropology of the Americas is home to doctoral students from Germany and abroad. Here you will find all the information you need about a doctorate in the field of ethnology at the University of Bonn. An overview of the current doctoral topics sorted by supervisor can also be found here.
Active participation in the doctoral network and the research colloquium is part of the doctorate at the department. In the doctoral network, doctoral students meet at regular intervals to report on the progress of their research projects in the presence of their supervisors. They also organize workshops and conferences to which they invite experts from Germany and abroad.
In the research colloquium, doctoral students present the topic and objectives of their work to a larger audience once or twice during the doctoral phase.
How do you become a doctoral candidate at our department?
Interested candidates first contact a professor of their choice by email and send an exposé of 5 - 7 pages with the research question, the research status, the planned research method, expected research results and an initial preliminary work plan and schedule. Candidates can only enrol for a doctorate at the University of Bonn once they have received written confirmation and formally concluded a supervision agreement.
The supervision provides for regular and independently organized reports to the supervisor.
Subject classification of the dissertation and written language
At the University of Bonn, the dissertation can be written in the subject of Ethnology with special emphasis on the Americas or in the subject of Cultural and Social Anthropology. In both cases, the dissertation can be written in German, Spanish or English. Other languages may also be accepted on application. In any case, however, a 20-page summary in German must be included.
The dissertation will be assessed in writing by two reviewers. One of these two must be a professor at the University of Bonn. The second reviewer may come from another university in Germany or abroad and must be familiar with the topic of the dissertation.
