PhD Program at the Departament Anthropology of the Americas
The Department of Anthropology of the Americas is home to doctoral students from Germany and abroad. Here you will find all the information you need about a PhD in the field of anthropology at the University of Bonn. An overview of the current doctoral topics sorted by supervisor can be found here.
Active participation in the PhD network and the research colloquium is part of the PhD at the department. In the PhD network, PhD students meet at regular intervals to report on the progress of their research projects in the presence of their supervisors. They also organize workshops and conferences to which they invite experts from Germany and abroad.
In the research colloquium, PhD students present the topic and objectives of their work to a larger audience once or twice during the PhD phase.
How do you become a PhD candidate at the Department of Anthropology of the Americas?
Prospective candidates initially contact a professor of their choice via email and submit a 5-7 page proposal including the research question, current state of research, planned methodology, expected research outcomes, and an initial tentative work and timeline. Only with a written acceptance and the formal conclusion of a supervision agreement can candidates enroll for a PhD at the University of Bonn.
Supervision entails regular and independently organized reporting to the supervisor.
The disciplinary classification of the dissertation and the language
At the University of Bonn, a dissertation in the field of Anthropology of the Americas with a special focus on Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, Ethnohistory or Linguistics can be pursued. For both, the dissertation can be written in German, Spanish, or English. Upon request, other languages may also be permissible. However, in any case, an approximately 20-page summary in German must be included.
The dissertation is evaluated in writing by two examiners. One of these examiners must be a professor at the University of Bonn. The second examiner may come from another university, either domestic or international, and must be knowledgeable in the subject matter of the dissertation.
Defense of the dissertation
