The Bonn Center for dependency and slavery studies hosts the Cluster of Excellence “Beyond Slavery and Freedom”, which aims to overcome the binary opposition of “slavery versus freedom”. We approach the phenomenon of slavery and other types of strong asymmetrical dependency from methodologically and theoretically distinct perspectives.
This interdisciplinary workshop will discuss the applicability of the category of (asymmetrical) dependency to analyzing the colonial period in the Americas. The period is appropriate for this purpose because the relations of dependency rooted in the pre-colonial period and those that emerged during the colonial one overlap in this “hinge period.” Hence, these dependencies laid the ground for the economic, social, and political relations that emerged after the independence of the Latin American countries. From this perspective, we ask ourselves about the current state of research on this topic in Germany and Latin America. Some of the initial questions we propose to discuss during this one-day workshop are: What main problems can we address through the category of (asymmetrical) dependency in our current research? From which perspective(s) do we ask our research questions? How does the colonial period play a role in our reflection on the problems (such as dependency, racism, discrimination, etc.) that Latin American countries have experienced from their independence to the present day? How specific to each of our disciplines is the way in which we approach the problems and issues that are present in our research?
