DESCRIPTION:This talk examines animacy-sensitive demonstratives in Waiwai 
 (Cariban)\, focusing on the\nremote deictic contrast traditionally describ
 ed between mîkro (animate) and mînî (inanimate).\nEarlier grammatical d
 escriptions and published narrative materials show a stable animate–\nin
 animate distribution in natural discourse. However\, elicited speech from 
 bilingual Waiwai\nspeakers reveals that the animate form mîkro can also o
 ccur with inanimate referents in\ncontrolled tasks.\nThe analysis compares
  narrative corpus data with elicited material and shows that the observed\
 noverlap is restricted to a single lexical item and does not affect the br
 oader demonstrative\nsystem. These findings are situated within the typolo
 gy of demonstrative systems and within\nthe Cariban language family\, illu
 strating how localized extensions may arise without implying\nstructural c
 hange across the paradigm.
